Three metrics that matter more than pageviews

Pageviews feel good in a report and explain almost nothing. Here’s what we look at instead.

  • Analytics

Pageviews went up is the easiest sentence to put in a report and the least useful one for deciding what to do next. It tells you traffic arrived — nothing about whether it did anything once it got there.

What we track instead

Scroll depth on key pages, time-to-first-action, and return-visitor rate tell you far more about whether a site is actually working than a raw view count ever will.
